Brothers and sisters Marriage known as ‘Nikkah’ in Arabic is a legal contract between a man and
woman. Not a man and man, or a woman and a woman. May Allah guide us and forgive us all.
Marriage is a very important aspect of the deen. It serves as a legal means for procreating, it also brings
two families together, hence promote unity among the ummah. It also saves individuals from
fornication, etc.
Allah says in the glorious Quran: “ And among His signs is this, that He created for you mates from
among yourselves, that you may dwell in peace and tranquility with them, and He has put love and
mercy between your (hearts): Verily in that are signs for those who reflect” (Quran 30:21).
In Surah Nisa Allah says: “O People be careful of (your duty to) your Lord, who created you from a
single being and created its mate of the same (kind) and spread from these two, many men and
women; and be careful of (your duty to) Allah, by Whom you demand one another your right, and (to)
the ties of relationship; surely Allah ever watches over you” (Quran 4:1)
Note that in Islam there is no place for celibacy
As a man how much do I need to save before I can get into this institution called marriage?
In Islam, Allah has made breadwinning the responsibility of men. The man is the head of the family and
his duties include providing shelter, food, clothing and other basic needs of the family.
Then it means the man has to save a lot of money right? Not Necessarily
Narrated by Sahl bin Sa’ad As-Sa’idi: A woman came to Allah’s Messenger (Sallalahu Alaihi Wassallam)
and said, “O Allah’s Messenger (Sallalahu Alaihi Wassallam)! I have come to give you myself in marriage
(without mahr). “Allah’s Messenger (Sallalahu Alaihi Wassallam) looked at her. He looked at her
carefully and fixed his glance on her and lowered his head. When the lady saw that he did not say
anything, she sat down. A man from his companions said, “O Allah’s Messenger (Sallalahu Alaihi
Wassallam) if you are not in need of her, then marry her to me”. The Prophet (Sallalahu Alaihi
Wassallam) said “have you got anything to offer?” The man said “No, by Allah, O Allah’s Messenger
(Sallalahu Alaihi Wassallam)”. The prophet said to him, “Go to your family and see if you have
something.” The man went and returned, saying, “No, by Allah, I have not found anything”. Allah’s
Apostle (Sallalahu Alaihi Wassallam) said “Go again and look for something, even if it is an iron ring.” He
went again and returned saying “No, by Allah, O Allah’s Messenger (Sallalahu Alaihi Wassallam)! I could
not find even an Iron ring, but this is my Izar (waist sheet).” He had no rida. He added, “I give half of it to
her.” Allah’s Messenger (Sallalahu Alaihi Wassallam) said, “What will she do with your Izar? If you wear
it she will be naked and if she wears it you will be naked.” So that man sat for a long while and then got
up (to depart). When Allah’s Messenger (Sallalahu Alaihi Wassallam) saw him going, he ordered that he
be called back. When he came, the Prophet (Sallalahu Alaihi Wassallam) said, “How much of the Quran
do you know?” He said “I know such Surah and such Surah,” counting them. The Prophet (Sallalahu
Alaihi Wassallam) said, “Do you know them by heart?” He replied “Yes”. The Prophet (Sallalahu Alaihi
Wassallam) said “Go, I marry her to you for that much of a Quran which you have.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 5087, book 67, Hadith 25
From the above hadith you can see that dowry is the most important aspect that must be fulfilled before
any marriage. Shelter is also an important aspect that men must be able to provide. The man must save
enough money that can be used to provide shelter and also for the payment of the woman’s dowry.
Does he have to save until the money is enough to build a house or rent a flat? Not necessarily
The man can even stay in his father’s house and get married provided he can afford the dowry. A single
room will do it doesn’t have to be a flat or bungalow and what have you. Now the amount he needs to
save for the dowry depends on the woman he is marrying since she will determine how much should be
paid as her dowry. Allah says in the glorious Quran: “And give women their dowries as a free gift, but if
they of themselves be pleased to give up to you a portion of it then eat it with enjoyment and with
wholesome result.” (Quran 4:4).
Please my dear men if you have enough money to rent a single room and pay a dowry then you can
get married. May Allah increase us in faith. Aameen.
In a nutshell, In Islam a man needs to save as much as can buy shelter and pay dowry before he can go
ahead and get married. Shelter and dowry are the basic requirement. May Allah help all single Muslim
men out there save enough to get married Aameen.
Narrated by Abdullah radiya Allahu Anhuu; we were with the prophet (Sallalahu Alaihi Wassallam) while
we were young and had no wealth whatsoever. So Allah’s Messenger (Sallalahu Alaihi Wassallam) said,
“O young people! Whoever among you can marry, should marry, because it helps him lower his gaze
and guard his modesty, and whoever is not able to marry should fast, as fasting diminishes sexual
power”.
Sahih al-Bukhari 5066, book 67, Hadith 4
How much does a woman need to save before she can get married? Nothing, Zero.
The woman is going to be catered for by the man so she does not need to save anything before she can
married. However it is good if she also saves to support her family.
In conclusion, a Muslim man needs to save as much as can buy a shelter and pay dowry before he can
get married but a woman needs to save absolutely nothing. May Allah help all singles out there get
married. Aameen.
The good I have said, is from Allah and may He help us all benefit from it. The wrong ones are from me
may Allah forgive me and us all. Wassallama wa taslima alaa rasulinaa Mohammed Sallalahu Alaihi
