UNIQUENESS OF SURATUL FALAQ AND NASS

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The Best of Praises and Thanks belong to Allah, the Lord of the Entire Universe. He is the One
who Created Mankind and Jinkind in order for them to worship Him. It isn’t that He needed
sustenance from them, neither did He need from them feeding. He, Allah, is the Possessor of
Strength, the Mighty One. Praises that are superiority to all other praises like His Superiority
over His creatures shall forever be showered upon Him as much He wills.
Among His signs and from His Enormous mercy is that Allah, “taught the Qur’an. He created
man: He taught him speech.” Alhamdu-liLlah, Allah revealed the Qur’an to His beloved Prophet
SAW in which we are given the explanation to everything. In the Qur’an is guidance for the
Pious as Allah stated in the second verse of AL-Baqarah that, “this is the book in which there is
no doubt, a guidance to the pious. Those who believe in the unseen and perform Salah and
spend from that which we sustain them...” Among the matters of the unseen is that Allah
created the jinns and veiled them from our eyes. It has been proven from numerous texts in the
Quran and Sunnah of the Prophet SAW, the existence of this race and we have been given some
of their characteristics. One of the nature of these creatures which very known to almost all
Muslims is their ability to cause harm to humans spiritually. This harm is sometimes caused by
them of their own will or they work together some human beings in order to cause harm to
other human beings. This is a characteristic which Allah SWA has given to them. Allah SWA in
His infinite Mercy, verily gave us numerous ways by which we can protect ourselves from these
creatures and also any other forms of harm that might be caused either by them or our fellow
human beings. Because among the other forms spiritual harm that can befall us is that which is
caused by humans themselves to their fellow humans beings is what we refer to as evil eye. It is
referred to a witchcraft or wizardry in certain situations when the caster is very aware of that
power and is able to control it as stated in the Quran and Sunnah of the Prophet SAW. Allah
says in the al-Qalam that, “and indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with
their eyes when they hear the message, and they say, “Indeed, He is mad.”
Alhamdu-liLlah, once again, Allah has revealed the Quran to us through His Messenger SAW,
within which we can find cure as He stated in Suratul Isra. Within the Quran is that which is a
cure to the believers but as for the disbelievers, it only increases them is their wrong doings.
May Allah SWA protect us from disbelief.
From the means with which we can protect ourselves from all kinds of harm both physical and
spiritual and with we can cure ourselves from harms that have already afflicted us is the two
surahs from the Qur’an which have been named al-Mu’awidhatayn, the two Protectors. These
surahs we commonly know them as birabbil falaq and birabbin-naas. In shall Allah, today we
shall look at the uniqueness of these two chapters as the topic of our discussion has put it.
First of all, I would assume that everyone here knows those two surahs so there will be no need
for us to put them here. But whoever does not know can look at the last two chapters of the
Qur’an. These are the chapters whose uniqueness we shall be looking at today, in shaa Allah.

The first form of uniqueness we shall look at concerning these two chapters is very general. And
that is the fact that these two, are also verses from the Quran. They are among the signs of and
verses of Allah with which Allah SWA makes known to us the believers, His greatness and
Power. And with these verses He makes known to the disbelievers and all of us His existence
and Sovereignty. Like it is stated in an-Naas, we are told that Allah is the Lord of Mankind, He is
the Master of Mankind and He is also the God of Mankind. One of the miracles of these
chapters, like all other chapters of the Quran has been stated in the last verse of suratul Kahf in
which Allah emphatically states that, “if the seas were ink to the words of my Lord, they would
be exhausted before the words of my Lord are exhausted even if the like of them (the seas)
were brought again...” Allahu Akbar. Let us look at the number of verses in these two chapters.
Allahu Akbar, yet Allah says that if we were to write what they entail, oceans of ink will not
suffice that task.
These two chapters, are the only chapters of the Qur’an which have been given the name, the
protectors or that which is used to protect. Though it is known that there are other verses in
the Qur’an that can be used for that purpose, none other has been given that name except
these two chapters. This is because they were revealed mainly because of that purpose.
The second unique fact about these two chapters is the reason why they were revealed to the
Prophet SAW. But before that, it has been narrated that the Prophet SAW used to seek Allah’s
protection using these surahs and some have said that this surah is used to safeguard oneself
from hypocrisy. Now, it was narrated from the Mother of the Believers, ‘A’isha, the daughter of
Abu-Bakr, may Allah be pleased with them both, that a magic spell was cast upon the Prophet
SAW by a jew who bore the name, Lubayd bin al-A’asam, and this spell affected the Prophet
SAW to the extent that the Prophet used to feel that he did certain things which, in reality, he
did not do. This was the situation of the Prophet SAW for some time and then he said to his
wife, ‘O ‘A’isha Allah has instructed me regarding a matter about which I had asked him. Two
angels came to me and one of them sat by my head whiles the other sat by my foot. The one by
my head said, ‘what is wrong with this man?’ the other said, ‘a spell has been cast on him.’ He
then asked, ‘and who cast it on him?’ the other replied, ‘Lubaid bin al-A’asam.’ He again asked,
‘with what?’ the other angel replied, ‘the skin of the pollen of a male date tree with a comb and
the hair stuck to it, kept under a stone in the well of Dhi-arwan...’ He then went to the well and
removed it. And ibn Abbas said, ‘and he SAW sent Aliyy and Zubayr and Ammaar bin Yaasir and
they removed it and they saw that it was tied with eleven knots. And Allah revealed these two
surahs and they were eleven verses in total. And whenever a verse was recited a knot will be
untied until the last knot was untied...” Allahu Akbar. We can see from these narrations the
reason why these surahs were revealed and the miracle they came with. This is the Knowledge
of Allah SWA, this is the Power of Allah SWA.
It should be noted, the importance of the revelation of these verses in the religion of Allah. This
is the Prophet of Allah SAW. If Allah willed He would have just cured the Prophet SAW right
away without any of these events happening. But He SWA revealed these verses to the Prophet

to teach us the Ummah of Islam numerous lessons some of which He has made known to us.
The Prophet SAW was not going to be with us forever but the Qur’an and his teachings will
remain even after his death SAW. Allah gave us these two verse as a source of relief and healing
and as a cure to all our ailments, both physically and spiritually. We live in a generation in which
innovations are very wide spread and Muslims prefer to use complicated ways to solve their
problems, ways which are not even legislated in our religion. Meanwhile Allah has given us very
simple means which come with great effect if we put our trust in Allah SWA.
It was narrated by ‘Uqbah bin ‘Aamir that once he was travelling with the Prophet SAW when
they were engulfed by a very fierce and intense wind, then Prophet SAW then started seeking
refuge with suratul falaq and suratun Naas and he was saying, ‘O Uqbah seek protection with
these two for protection has never been sought with the likes of these two.’” This hadith tells
us a lot about these two surahs. One of them being that these two surah are of the greatest
weapons with which a believer can seek protection. The other being that a believer can use
these two surahs to seek Allah’s protection in whatever situation he finds himself. In another
hadith related by Imam Muslim, on the authority of ‘Aisha, whenever the Prophet SAW used to
be in pains and uneasiness, he would recite these two surahs and the blow it into palms and
wipe his body with it and, “whenever it became too severe I will recite and then wipe him with
it using his hands...”
My dear brothers and sisters, how many times do we complain about feeling dizzy, headaches

and all sorts of uneasiness and difficulties? How many of us have ever thought of using biribbin-
naas and birabbil falaq to solve our uneasiness. Whenever you are having a headache, you are

feeling dizzy or any sort of difficulties our first aid should be these two surahs. WaLlahi if
Muslims were to be using these two surahs all the time, we wouldn’t have the need of first aid
kits.
There is a lot that can be said about these two glorious chapters from the glorious Quran but
this is the little we have to say about it for now. May Allah SWA forgive us for our errors and
mistakes and may He not deny us of His Mercy and Blessings. May He have Mercy upon, Forgive
and Guide our parents. The married ones may Allah put Baraka and peace in their marriages.
The unmarried ones may Allah protect from zina and make it easy for to get married to
righteous spouses. May Allah protect us from shirk and unite us in Jannah with His Prophet
SAW and all the righteous one who have preceded us and those who shall go after us.
As-Salamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatu-Llah Wa Barakatuhu
