JINN POSSESSION AND THEIR CAUSES
In the name of Allah, most Gracious, ever Mercifull.
All perfect praise are due to Allah, we worship Him and seek His help. We seek forgiveness from Him.
And we also seek refuge in Him from evil our selves and the word of our bad deeds. Whosoever Allah
has guided can never be misled and whoever He (Allah) has denied guidance can never attain any guide.
I bear testimony that He is the one, worthy of worship and non else. And that prophet Muhammad
(s.a.w) is to Him a slave and a messenger. Upon him we invoke Allah's blessings and mercy, upon his
kinship, his companions and upon all those who follow in righteousness till the end of time.
As for what follows, the best of speech is the book of Allah. The best of guidance is the guidance of
prophet Muhammad (s.a.w). The evil of matters are the newly invented ones. Anything newly invented
in the deen of Allah is an innovation. And every innovation in the deen of Allah is leading path to
misguidance. And every misguidance leads to hell fire.
Jinn Possession and Their Causes
Before I proceed to discuss the nature of jinn possession in humans, we need to understand that it is not
easy for a jinn to harm a human physically or to appear to him, because in that instance the jinn is
exposing himself to punishment. To take a different form of animals, may also cause the jinn to be
treated like those animals.
Jinn possession is a reality and the evidence is from both the Qur'an and the Sunnah of our beloved
Prophet Muhammad ( s.a.a w). Allah the Almighty mentioned in the holy Qur'an,: ٱلَّذِينَ يَأْكُلُونَ ٱلرِّبَوٰا۟ لَا يَقُومُونَ
إِلَّا كَمَا يَقُومُ ٱلَّذِى يَتَخَبَّطُهُ ٱلشَّيْطَٰنُ مِنَ ٱلْمَسِّ
Those who devour usury will not stand except as stand one whom the Evil one by his touch Hath driven
to madness. (Al- Baqara : 275). Scholars of tafseer, especially Ibn Katheer is of the view that the word
“mass" used in the verse is an indication of one being possessed by madness as a result of being touched
by the jinn. Allah knows best.
How do jinn enter humans?
It is an established fact that the jinns are from flames, and flames are like air. There are paths in the
body through which these jinns may pass to any part of their choice, hence they first build their place in
the brain and afterwards spread whatever sickness or attacks they want over the body or the part they
want to affect. This is just one of the many views of scholars. Allah knows best.
Jinn possession can be grouped into four:
1. مس كلي (whole body possession)
2. مس جزءي( part of the body, such as the limbs, eyes, head , brain etc)
3.مس دائم ( In this case the jinn possesses the body for a very long with/without the awareness of the
person)
4. مس طائف( In this situation the jinn is possessing group of humans or group of the jinns may be
possessing a single person). And this can be treated as mass possession. Allah the Almighty mentioned
in the Qur'an: (إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ ٱتَّقَوۡا۟ إِذَا مَسَّهُمۡ طَـٰۤىِٕفࣱ مِّنَ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنِ تَذَكَّرُوا۟ فَإِذَا هُم مُّبۡصِرُونَ)
[Al-A'raf : 201].Those who fear Allah, when a thought of evil from Satan assaults them, bring Allah to
remembrance, when lo! they see (aright).
Reasons for Jinns over powering and possessing Humans
Shykh Al- Islam Ibn Taymiyah mentioned in Risaalat al- jinn (p: 27) regarding the possible causes of jinn
possession in Humans. And he said :
1) Jinn possession in humans can manifest in the form of lust, intense desires and love. Jinn may possess
a person out of admiration from the jinn to the human or from the human to the jinn. Jinn may fall in
love with the human and possess him just as it happens among or between humans. This indeed is an
act of disobedience to rule of Allah.
2) In other instances the jinn may possess the human because of zulm ( transgression). Possessing him
for no reason but just to punish the human. This may be due to hatred and jealous. And this sometimes
occur especially in four situations
a) During intense anger
b) during intense fear/ sorrow to an extent the person forget of Allah, and lose hope from the protection
of Allah.
c) deeper engagement in lustful acts, alcoholism, gambling, fornication, wasting time in useless acts etc.
These acts make the human to become less concious with Allah, through which the jinn may possess
him.
d) Complete negligence to the worship and service of Allah.
3) Human wronging the jinn unknowingly. A human attack the jinn without knowing, by falling on him,
throwing a stone at him, urinating on him, or pouring hot water on him, especially in toilets and
bathroom and even on the open spaces. In these instances the jinn may want to revenge.
4) Witches/ Wizards especially through the empowerment of sihr ( magic). Witches do manipulate the
jinns especially the evil ones to attack other humans out hatred and mischief. The witches would take
them as their helpers and ally. Allah mentioned this in the holy Qur'an:وَأَنَّهُۥ كَانَ رِجَالٌ مِّنَ ٱلْإِنسِ يَعُوذُونَ بِرِجَالٍ
True, there were persons among mankind who took shelter with persons among the Jinns, but they
increased them in folly.
The Jinns are then manipulated using magic to cause more harm and destruction among the human
kind.
Symptoms of Jinn possession
There are many sypmtoms of jinn possession, but scholars have grouped them into two: symptoms that
occur when one is awake and symptoms that show when the person is asleep. Let's list them!
When Awake:
1- Turning away from acts of worship and acts of obedience to Allah including remembrance of Allah.
2- Erratic behavior in one's words, deeds and movements.
3- Paralysis of limbs with no medical cause.
4- Seizures with no medical cause.
5- Being quick to get angry or weep and sometimes yelling for no apparent cause.
6- Sitting in the toilet or bathroom for a long time, and talking to oneself.
7- Constant headache on part of the head or even both parts of the head with no medical cause which is
not cured or eased by painkillers.
8- Irregular menstruation in women for no apparent cause.
9- Impotence and barringness with both spouse being able or capable.
10- Frequent isolation from people.
There are any others but the above are just few.
During Sleeping:
1- Frightening nightmares, which include seeing of various kinds of creatures such as ghosts or
apparitions, seeing oneself falling from a high place, seeing people in strange forms and snakes. A man
may see a woman who wants to have intercourse with her and vice versa constantly in his dreams or
may see someone threatening him.
2- Insomnia, anxiety and fear upon waking
3- Talking loudly in one's sleep, or moaning, groaning and crying. And many others. Allah knows best.
THE JINKIND
In the name of Allah, most Gracious, most Merciful.
All perfect praise are due to Allah, we worship Him and seek His help. We seek forgiveness from Him.
And we also seek refuge in Him from evil our selves and the word of our bad deeds. Whosoever Allah

prophet Muhammad (s.a.w). The evil of matters are the newly invented ones. Anything newly invented
in the deen of Allah is an innovation. And every innovation in the deen of Allah is leading path to
misguidance. And every misguidance leads to hell fire.
The topic for discussion today is the JINKIND.
Before we proceed to do anything, we first of all need to understand the meaning of the word جن( JINN).
This word is an Arabic word, and refers to that which is covered, concealed or hidden. Reference can be
made to various verses of the Qur'an in this regard. Allah the Almighty says in the Qur'an:
(فَلَمَّا جَنَّ عَلَیۡهِ ٱلَّیۡلُ رَءَا كَوۡكَبࣰاۖ قَالَ هَـٰذَا رَبِّیۖ فَلَمَّاۤ أَفَلَ قَالَ لَاۤ أُحِبُّ ٱلۡـَٔافِلِینَ)
(Surat Al-An'am 76). When the night covered him over, He saw a star: He said: "This is my Lord." But
when it set, He said: "I love not those that set." Jinns are covered by the sight of humans hence their
name.
Hence Allah the Almighty says: إِنَّهُۥ يَرَىٰكُمْ هُوَ وَقَبِيلُهُۥ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا تَرَوْنَهُمْ. " He sees you, he and his tribe from
whence you see him not".
It should be noted that even though we don't see jinns does not mean they do not exist. The believe in
their existence is part of our faith because it is part of the believe if علم الغيب( knowledge of the hidden).
The Qur'an and Sunnah are replete with of evidence of the existence of jinns.
Origin of the jinn
Allah the Almighty created the jinns from smokeless fire. Allah mentioned of this this in the Qur'an: (وَخَلَقَ
[Surat Ar-Rahman 15]. 5. And He created Jinns from fire free of smoke. Jinns existed long before the
existence of man, Allah says in the holy Qur'an: (وَٱلۡجَاۤنَّ خَلَقۡنَـٰهُ مِن قَبۡلُ مِن نَّارِ ٱلسَّمُومِ)
[Surat Al-Hijr 27]. And the Jinn race, We had created before, from the fire of a scorching wind. In a
hadith recorded by Imam Muslim on the strength of Aisha may Allah be pleased with her, the Prophet (
peace be upon him) said: خلق الملائكة من نور وخلق الجان من مارج من نار وخلق آدم مما وصف لكم. " The angels were
created from light, the jinn we're created from smokeless flame of fire and Adam was created from from
what has been described to you [by the Qur'an].( Muslim 18/123, sharh Nawawi).
Evidence of The Existence of Jinn.
In The Light of the Qur'an:
The Qur'an categorically mentioned about the existence of the jinn in many places of different chapters,
few of which shall be mentioned here.
1) Allah mentioned of the story of the jinn and how they received the message of Prophet Muhammad
(s.a.w) and He the Almighty says:
(وَإِذۡ صَرَفۡنَاۤ إِلَیۡكَ نَفَرࣰا مِّنَ ٱلۡجِنِّ یَسۡتَمِعُونَ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ فَلَمَّا حَضَرُوهُ قَالُوۤا۟ أَنصِتُوا۟ۖ فَلَمَّا قُضِیَ وَلَّوۡا۟ إِلَىٰ قَوۡمِهِم مُّنذِرِینَ)
[Surat Al-Ahqaf 29]. Behold, We turned towards thee a company of Jinn (quietly) listening to the Qur'an:
when they stood in the presence thereof, they said, "Listen in silence!" When the (reading) was finished,
they returned to their people, to warn (them of their sins).
2) Allah the Almighty called by the name Jinn in the holy Qur'an: يَٰمَعْشَرَ ٱلْجِنِّ وَٱلْإِنسِ أَلَمْ يَأْتِكُمْ رُسُلٌ مِّنكُمْ يَقُصُّونَ
عَلَيْكُمْ ءَايَٰتِى وَيُنذِرُونَكُمْ لِقَآءَ يَوْمِكُمْ هَٰذَا, . "O ye assembly of Jinns and men! came there not unto you messengers
from amongst you, setting forth unto you My signs, and warning you of the meeting of this Day of
yours?" ( An-am: 130).
3) Allah the Almighty says in the Qur'an regarding their interaction and relationship with men, and He
"True, there were persons among mankind who
took shelter with persons among the Jinns, but they increased them in folly". ( Al- Jinn: 6).
4) It is sufficient and worth to mention that Allah has dedicated a whole chapter of the holy Qur'an to
jinns which is known the chapter of Jinns.
In The Light of Hadith/ Sunnah
1) Imam Muslim narrated is his saheeh, on the authority Ibn Mas'ood, may Allah be pleased with him
said: We were in the company of the messenger of Allah ( may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon
him) one night, then we noticed he was missing. We searched for him in the valleys and mountain
passes, then we thought that had either been taken away( by the jinn) or killed secretly. We spent the
worst night that any people have ever spent, then when the morning was due we saw him coming from
the direction of Hira'. We said to him, O messenger of Allah, we missed you and looked for you, but we
could not find you,and we we spent the worst night that any people have spent. He said " A petitioner of
the Jinn came to me and I went with him and recited the Qur'an to them". The he went with us and
showed us their tracks and traces of their fires. The jinn asked of their provisions and he said: لكم كل عدم
" Yours is every every bone over which the
name of Allah has been mentioned, which will fall into your hands covered with flesh, and every piece of
dung is food for your animals". The messenger of Allah the said : Do not use these two things for
cleaning yourselves after relieving, for they are the food of your brothers.( Muslim: 4/170, sharh
Nawawi).
Names Of Jinns
Scholars of the Arabic linguistics and grammar mentioned as relaid by the famous scholar Ibn Abdul
Barr, the Jinns are of different types base on their task and their nature. Let's consider the following:
1) The جن (Jinn) this name given to them when referring to jinns themselves and nothing else.
2) عمار( The 'ammaar/ 'ummaar) . This name is given to the Jinns that live among mankind.
3) أرواح ( Arwaah) this name is given to the jinn that possess children/ young ones.
4) شياطين( Shayaateen) the evil jinns that antagonize humans.
5)عفاريت( Afareet). The dangerous Jinns that are even more harmful and are very strong.
Other names of Jinns are given by some scholars but are in some way may be forming part of
aforementioned. Names such as Maarid, Iblees, etc.
Types of Jinns
Jinns are into three types as captured in the Hadith of the messenger of Allah, Muhammad (s.a.w).
1) Those that fly through the air
2) Those that are snakes and dogs
3) Those that stay in places and travel about.
" There are three types of jinn: one that havs wings and flies through the air, one that are snakes and
dogs, and one which stay in places but travel about."
