✍🏼 Lesson ; Four

 

THE USE OF اَلْ TO BEGIN A WORD

 

ال

This is a definite article which gives the meaning: "the". Eg;

 

1 دَرَّاجَةٌ   a bicycle

2 اَلدَّرَّاجَةُ the bicycle

 

The last letter in Eg 1 has double dommah(ٌ ) on it, whereas in Eg 2, it has only one dommah( ُ ).

 

Note(s);✍🏼✍🏼

1. Words with ال are pronounced by putting Fat-hah on the ا and reducing the double vowel signs to one. eg; اَلْبَيْتُ

 

2. Whenever any of the following letters; ا،ب،ج،ح،خ،ع،غ،ف،ق،ك،م،و،ه،ي"،comes after ال, the ل remains active. These letters are called اَلْحُرُوفُالْقَمَرِيَّةُ

 

Eg; اَلْمَسْجِدُ

3. Whenever any of these letters; ت،ث،د،ذ،ر،ز،س،ش،ص،ض،ط،ظ،ل،ن"، comes after ال، the ل is kept silent. These letters are called. اَلْحُرُوفُالشَّمْسِيَّةُ

Eg; اَلطَّالِبُ

 

4. When a word with  ال is preceded by another word or letter, the ا is kept silent. Eg;

 

 

1 رَبُّالْبَيْتِ

2 وَالْمَسْجِدُ

 

 

Exercise;

Apply ال to the words provided in the previous lessons with their vowel signs.
