Alhamdulillah;Our topic will Base on
Meaning
of Fasting
Types
of Fasting
How
each came
We will limit our Topic to food fasting (sawmut_Ta'aam)
Fasting in Islam, known as Sawm (ﺻﻮﻡ) or siyamﺻﻴﺎﻡ
Arabic words for fasting , is abstaining from
eating and drinking. In the terminology of Islamic law, sawm means to abstain
from eating and drinking during daylight hours. The observance of sawm during
the Islamic holy month of Ramadan is one of the
Five Pillars of Islam
Muslims are prohibited from eating, drinking
and engaging in conjugal sexual relationships from dawn (fajr) to
sunset (maghrib ).
Sawm also carries a significant spiritual
meaning. It teaches one the principle of God Consciousness:
Allah SubhaanawaTa'ala emphatically stated in
SuratulBaqara that FASTING IS BETTER FOR US IN ALL ANGLE U CAN THINK OF and Allah further continued saying ONLY IF
WE KNOW
Allahu Akbar
Surah
Al-Baqara, Verse 184:
أَيَّامًامَّعْدُودَاتٍفَمَنكَانَمِنكُممَّرِيضًاأَوْعَلَىٰسَفَرٍفَعِدَّةٌمِّنْأَيَّامٍأُخَرَوَعَلَىالَّذِينَيُطِيقُونَهُفِدْيَةٌطَعَامُمِسْكِينٍفَمَنتَطَوَّعَخَيْرًافَهُوَخَيْرٌلَّهُوَأَنتَصُومُواخَيْرٌلَّكُمْإِنكُنتُمْتَعْلَمُونَ
For a certain number of days; but whoever
among you is sick or on a journey, then (he shall fast) a (like) number of
other days; and those who are not able to do it may effect a redemption by
feeding a poor man; so whoever does good spontaneously ,it is better for him; and that you fast is better for you if you know.
Let quickly move on to the types of Fasting
TYPES
OF FASTING IN ISLAM
Fasting in Islam has three (3) types
1. Obligatory
2. Voluntary
3. Penalty fasting
- OBLIGATORY FASTING
This includes the whole ninth month of the
lunar year i.e. Ramadan from the break of the dawn till sunset. Allah says in
the Quran,
Surah
Al-Baqara, Verse 183:
يَاأَيُّهَاالَّذِينَآمَنُواكُتِبَعَلَيْكُمُالصِّيَامُكَمَاكُتِبَعَلَىالَّذِينَمِنقَبْلِكُمْلَعَلَّكُمْتَتَّقُونَ
O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for
you, as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may guard (against
evil).
- VOLUNTORY
There are times when it is recommended to
make voluntary fasting, after the Traditions of Prophet Muhammad.
The intention for a voluntary fast can be
made during the day. Let us say that you woke up and prayed Fajr. You did not
have the intention to fast that day and you also did not eat, drink, have
intercourse, or otherwise do anything that would break a person’s fast. Later in the day,
you can make the intention for a voluntary fast if you have not done any of
those things that break the fast. This is based on ‘Aishah’s (may Allah be pleased with him) hadith: “
The
Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to us one day and said:
‘Do you have any (food)?’ We said, ‘No.’ He (peace and blessings
of Allah be upon him) said:‘Therefore, I am fasting.”
TYPES
OF VOLUNTARY FASTING
1.
Fasting Mondays and Thursdays
2.
Fasting on ayyam al Beed
3. Fasting on the day of Arafah
4.
Fasting on Shawwal
5.
Fasting on the day of Ashura
- FASTING ON MONDAYS AND THURSDAYS
It was narrated from Abu Qataadah al-Ansaari
that the Messenger of Allaah (salAllahu‘alayhiwasallam) was asked
about fasting on Mondays. He said:“On that day I was born,
and on it the Revelation came to me.”
Narrated by Muslim, 1162.
It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah
be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of
Allaah be upon him) said:
“Deeds are shown (to Allaah) on Mondays and
Thursdays, and I like my deeds to be shown when I am fasting.”
Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 747;
May Allah grant us eeman and empower us to
fast these days so that our deeds wii please Allah
- FASTING ON AYYAM AL BEED
Fasting the Ninth Day of Dhul-Hijjah (12th
Islamic month). The Islamic month in which the Hajj is performed is known as
Dhul-Hijjah. “Day of Arafah” is the ninth day of that
month.
It is recommended for those not performing
the Hajj pilgrimage to fast this day.
It is voluntary for we Muslims to fast 3 days in every Islami
month, the 13th, 14th, and 15th day of each lunar month.
We found this saying from the Blessed lips of
the Holy Prophet S.A.W He who fasts on Ayyam al-Beed every month attains reward
as if he fasted the whole year. [Nasai]
This month AyyalBeed falls on.
- FASTING ON THE DAY OF ARAFAH
Fasting the Ninth Day of Dhul-Hijjah (12th
Islamic month).
The Islamic month in which the Hajj is
performed is known as Dhul-Hijjah. “Day of Arafah” is the ninth day of that
month.
It is recommended for those not performing
the Hajj pilgrimage to fast this day.
At dawn of this day, Muslim pilgrims will
make their way from Mina to a nearby hillside and plain called Mount Arafat and
the Plain of `Arafah
It was from this site that Muhammad in gave
one of his last famous sermons in the final year of his life.
The virtue of Fasting on the day of Arafah
The Holy Prophet said
“Fasting on the day of Arafah is an expiation for
two years, the year preceding it and the year following it.”
- FASTING ON SHAWWAL*
Shawwāl (Arabic :ﺷﻮّﺍﻝ) is the
tenth month of the lunar Islamic calendar .Shawwāl means to 'lift or
carry'; so named because a female camel normally would be carrying a fetus at
this time of year.
1. Six Days in the Month of Shawwal (the
month following Ramadan or the 10th Islamic month)
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be
upon him) said,
“Whoever fasts during the month of Ramadan and then
follows it with six days of Shawwal will be (rewarded) as if he had fasted the
entire year.”
Allahu Akbar
The reasoning behind this tradition is that a
good deed in Islam is rewarded 10 times, hence fasting 30 days during Ramadan
and 6 days during Shawwāl is equivalent to fasting the whole year in terms
of reward.
365 days = 1 year
1 good deed = 10
30 days of fasting= 30×10=300
6days of fasting=6×10=60
Hence 300 + 60 = 360
360 equivalent to 365 which is = 1year
MaaSha Allah
Our Noble Prophet didn't go to school BUT He
is the BEST MATHEMATICIAN
Allahu Akbar
- HISTORICAL EVENT OF ASHURA
Ibn `Abbas said: "The Prophet came to
Madinah and found the Jews fasting on the day of `Ashura'. He said: 'What is
this?' They (Jews) said:
“This
is a righteous day; it is the day when Allah saved the Children of Israel from
their enemies”
so Musa (Moses) fasted on this day.'
The Holy Prophet s.a.w.said: 'We have more right to Musa than you,' so
he fasted on that day and commanded (the Muslims) to fast on that day."
(Al-Bukhari)
The practice of fasting on `Ashura' was known
even in the days of Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic period),“Observe the fast of
Aashura and oppose the Jews. Fast a day before it or a day after.”Hence, it is important to
either fast on the ninth and the tenth or the tenth and the eleventh of
Muharram. To fast only on the day of Aashora is Makrooh(undesirable). The
Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu-Alayhi-Wasallam) has exhorted and encouraged his
Ummah to fast on this day. He said:
“This fast is a compensation for the (minor) sins of
the past year.” (Hadith:Muslim)
- PENALTY FASTING
under certain circumstances Fasting is used
as a penalty for a certain action that requires punishment in Islam.Allah said;
"and
fulfill the promise, surely (every) promise shall be questioned about."
(Surah
Bani Israel 17:34)
1. if an oath is given, and circumstances
dictate that it be broken (or the one giving the oath deliberately breaks it),
one needs to fast for three days consecutively if they cannot initially find 10
poor people to feed and provide clothing for (both of which are commanded
before the act of fasting as a form of repentance).
Days
of Oath
If you have an oath, for example: "If I
graduate with a good mark, I will fast for three days for God" then one
must fulfil this. This type of fasting is considered obligatory. Breaking the
oath will result in a sin.
Allah said concerning the above statement
Surah Al-Maeda, Verse 89:
لَايُؤَاخِذُكُمُاللَّهُبِاللَّغْوِفِيأَيْمَانِكُمْوَلَٰكِنيُؤَاخِذُكُمبِمَاعَقَّدتُّمُالْأَيْمَانَفَكَفَّارَتُهُإِطْعَامُعَشَرَةِمَسَاكِينَمِنْأَوْسَطِمَاتُطْعِمُونَأَهْلِيكُمْأَوْكِسْوَتُهُمْأَوْتَحْرِيرُرَقَبَةٍفَمَنلَّمْيَجِدْفَصِيَامُثَلَاثَةِأَيَّامٍذَٰلِكَكَفَّارَةُأَيْمَانِكُمْإِذَاحَلَفْتُمْوَاحْفَظُواأَيْمَانَكُمْكَذَٰلِكَيُبَيِّنُاللَّهُلَكُمْآيَاتِهِلَعَلَّكُمْتَشْكُرُونَ
Allah does not call you to account for what
is vain in your oaths, but He calls you to account for the making of deliberate
oaths; so its expiation is the feeding of ten poor men out of the middling
(food) you feed your families with, or their clothing, or the freeing of a
neck; but whosoever cannot find (means) then fasting for three days; this is the
expiation of your oaths when you swear; and guard your oaths. Thus does Allah
make clear to you His communications, that you may be Fateful.
May Allah guide and protect us from all form
of penalty fasting.
At this point, i will like to bring to your
notice another special month
When this special month is about to start the
gates of Heaven are opened.... the gates of Hell are closed and the devils are
chained."
It is the same month our code of conduct, our Divine Scripture, our Constitution... Full of
Rules and Regulations... that's the Glorious Qur'an.... Was sent down to us It
is no other Month than the MONTH OF
RAMADAN.
May Allah grant us long healthy lives to meet
the Month of Ramadan as well as other Months .....to be able to fast.
I will like to end the first presentation on RAMADAN SEMINAR on the topic "MEANING OF FASTING, TYPES AND HOW
EACH CAME with the greetings of the people of Jannah
"AssalamuAlaikumWarahmatullahiWabarakaatuhu"
