JANABA

Insha Allah we shall stop here today presenter is ready now we shall continue another time

BismiLlahi was-Salaatu was-Salaam 'alaamanlaanabiyyaba'dah.As-Salaamu 'alaikumwarahmatuLlahiwabarakaatuhu. We thank Allah for this day, and may he accept our 'ibaadaat. This writing is on _Janaaba_.

Janaaba is the state a person assumes after a sexual intercourse. This state prevents a person from performing certain rituals, such as _Salaat_, holding the Qur'an and staying in the masjid. A person in the state of _Janaaba_ should perform _Ghusl_ in order for him to be able to perform the acts he was previously prevented from observing. _Ghusl_ in this case is removing the state of sexual impurity by taking a bath.

When does one assume the state of _Janaaba?

Narrated by Abu Hurairah _radhiyaLlahu 'anhu_ (ra): The Prophet _sallaLlahu 'alaihiwasallam_ (saw) said, "When any one sits between the four parts of her body (arms and leg, of his wife) and exerts himself (has intercourse with her), bathing becomes obligatory (for both)." Agreed upon. Muslim added (to the above narration), "Even if he does not emit fliud." Scholars have elaborated on this, that, if a man enters a woman (with or without the emission of semen), then both parties have assumed the state of Janaaba, and _Ghusl_ becomes obligatory.

It is important to explain that the fluids discharged during foreplay, or while thinking of an erotic scene, or sometimes after urination do not require _Ghusl_, as they do not put one in the state of _Janaaba_.

Prohibitions in the state of Janaaba

Narrated 'Ali (ra): "The messenger of Allah (saw) used to recite the Qur'an to us unless he was _Junub_ (in a state of major ritual impurity)." Related by the five, and these are the wordings of at-Tirmidhi who authenticated it. IbnHibbân graded it as _Hasan_.

From this hadith, it is clear that one does not have to recite the Qur'an in the state of _Janaaba. It is however permissible to recite supplications. Therefore, if a verse from the Qur'an is a supplication, then it is permissible to recite it even if one is _Junub_. For instance, reciting the last two chapters of the Qur'an as a form of protection before sleeping is permissible, but reciting them for the purpose of recitation is forbidden.

Touching the Quran in this state is also prohibited.

It is also prohibited for one in the state of _Janaaba_ to stay in the masjid. However, he can enter the masjid if he wants to pick something up from it, and when the masjid is the only passage to another place.

This prohibition also applies to performing _Tawaaf_ (circumambulation) around al-Kabah.

It is also prohibited for one to perform _Salaat_ in this state.

Does this state affect my fasting?

Well, it depends on how I get into it. If it is through a wet dream, then I need not to worry about it. All I need to do is to perform _Ghusl_ and continue with my fasting. However, if I get into this state through sexual intimacy with my wife, then it nullifies my fasting.

One can however eat suhur, the pre-dawn meal, in the state of Janaaba, but should hasten to perform _Ghusl_ in order not to miss _Fajr_ Salah.

Narrated Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (ra): Allahs Messenger said, When one of you has intercourse with his wife, and wishes to repeat it, he should perform ablution between the two acts.Related by Muslim. (It is a recommended act in this case).

There is no set limit of time for the performance of _Ghusl_. It has to do with the performance of Salah and other acts of worship that require that one is in the state of _Tahaarah_. Therefore, one in this state can wait till the next Salah, provided the previous Salah has been offered in the state of _Tahaara_, thus purity. It is however recommended that one hastens to the performance of _Ghusl_, as it is the Sunnah that one always be in the state of _Tahaara_.

It is also permissible for a person, whether man or woman  who is _Junub_ to touch things such as plates, clothes and pots before performing _Ghusl_; because this person is not _Naajis_ (unpure).

The Prophet (saw) said: "There are three things which the angels don't not approach: the dead body of a _kaafir_ (disbeliever), a man who has perfumed himself with saffron (because this is frivolous and foolish behaviour, and is an imitation of women - Qayd al-Qadeer, 3/325), and a person who is _Junub_, until he does _Ghusl_." (Narrated by Abu Dawood, 4180; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in saheehAbiDawood, 3522).

It is therefore highly recommended that one hastens to the performance of _Ghusl_ when he/she is _Junub_.

WasollaLlahu 'alaanabiyyinaa Muhammad wa 'alaaaalihiwasallim.

As-Salaamu 'alaikumwarahmatuLlahiwabarakaatuhu

Maasha Allah we will end here. May Allah accept our ibaadaat
