THE SOUL (NAFFS)

THE SOUL (NAFFS)

We bear witness that there is no king or nothing that suit to be praised and worshiped except Allah,

the one who we do not see but yet still we have been ordered to be submissive to, the one who we do not see but yet still we believe in his existence, the one who we do not see but yet still we have hope in him that he will provide for us goodness if we turn to him alone.

We also bear witness that our prophet Muhammad is a through messenger and servant of Allah, the best of mankind, the best of creatures and the best of all the prophets.

May Allah have mercy on him?

Our topic is the soul

What exactly do we mean by “the soul”

Ruh is the soul/spirit that was breathed into Adam Alayhi salaam by Allah and breathed into us in our mothers womb.

Nafs is the human body plus the ruh. ei self, psyche, ego or soul.

I start this important presentation by asking brothers and sisters on this page that;

what makes you commit a sin and what makes you do good deeds?

And I hope after this presentation, we will realize when and how to control and prevent ourselves from evil.

Let’s use one or two verses to explain what the soul/Nafs is.

Suratul annisa

(1)   O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is Over watchful over you.

This means that,

1. Only a single soul was created

2. From that same soul, all of us were created from. (We are all from one flesh).

3. We are supposed to love each other.

        The prophet pbuh said;

*whoever that severe the relationship between ken and kith (relatives and nabours will not enter paradise.*

(Bukhari. The book of manners.)

4.This also means that Allah performs wonderful acts.

To understand the concept of the soul very well from this aya, we will look at a short story of the creation of Adam Alayhi salaam.

He is the first prophet. Allah first created jinns to leave on this earth and they disobey Allah. Because of that, Allah sent his angels to suck them to the sea and decided to create another creature. Three angels were sent by Allah one after the other to take sand from this earth for the creation of Adam alayhi salaam but only the third angel (the angel of death) was able to send the sand to Allah. Allah used this sand to create Adam alayhi salaam. Adam lay down idly for 40 days and Allah casted the ruh (spirit/soul) into him. Immediately when the soul was casted into him, he woke up.

The significant of this is that, the ruh/spirit/soul and the human body are different creatures.

And without the soul, our body will not be able to move or do anything. This is why one is considered as dead when the soul leaves his/her body.

THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE SOUL.

Suratul maaida;105

( 105 )   O you who have believed, Guard your own souls. Those who have gone astray will not harm you when you have been guided. To Allah is you return all together; then He will inform you of what you used to do.

This aya means that;

1.The soul behaves in two different ways, these ways are either it ;

  1. DO GOOD DEEDS
          OR
  2. BAD DEEDS.

2. Every individual should try and direct their souls towards good deeds.

3. Those who guard their souls are the true believers.

4. Those that guard their souls cannot be harmed by those who are astray.

5. The soul desire things (whether bard or good) and what we can use to control the soul is our mind, heart and every part of the body.

Therefore if you are someone who abstain from all kinds of sins and do good deeds no evil person can harm you.

THE STATES/TYPES OF SOUL/NAFS.

1. NAFS AL-AMMARA

The soul that is prone to evil. By its very nature it directs its owner towards every wrong action.

NB. No one can get rid of its wrong doing except the help of Allah.

SURATUL YUSSOUF( 53 )   And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful."

With this aya Yussuof Alaihi salaam was referring to the wife of Al-Aziz (the faaroh of Egypt) who was the course of his imprisonment.

This kind of naffs or soul ……….

  • Is as a result of evil lies hidden in the soul which leads it to do wrong.
  • This soul has shaytan as it ally. shaytan promise this person great reward by casting falsehood into it.

Those whose souls are in this state are,

the kind of people who do only or a lot of bad deeds. e,g the fellow will commit shirk, zina and others and he does not see anything wrong with it.

These are people who sees goodness in bad deeds and do not see anything good in good deeds.

These people find it easy to commit a bad deed but find it difficult to do good.

May Allah prevent our nafs from ever being in this state?

NB some of those who fall under this state are,

*The Christians, Jews and pagans

*Musicians( hippop, hiplife, westlife etc and gospel is the west of them)

*those who are much into committing sins and have distance themselves from good.

2.NAFS AL-LAWWAMA.

The soul which blames himself and knows when he does wrong and good.

SURATUL QIYAAMA;2

2 )   And I swear by the reproaching soul [to the certainty of resurrection].

1.This soul is conscious of what it does.

The person will always be blaming/asking himself; did I want this?

             Why did I do that?

Was this better than that? Etc.

2.They realize the wrong they have done and repent...then do wrong again, then repent and so on…….

3. This Aya also mean that on the Day of Judgment, everyone will be evidence to himself. No one will consider his judgment to be unjust.

Those having this kind of soul are; those who knew the bad/good deeds he committed before, during and after committing it

Then he will be asking himself or herself all kinds of questions.

NB most of us fall under this state

3.NAFS AL-MUTMA’INNA

This is the soul at peace.

SURATUL FAJR;27

27 )   [To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul,

( 28 )   Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him],

( 29 )   And enter among My [righteous] servants

( 30 )   And enter My Paradise."

1.It is the soul of the believer made calm and obey Allah and his messenger aiming to achieve what Allah has promised.

2.Chooses the lifestyle of the prophet as his way of life.

3.These people stay away from whatever the Quran and sunnah forbids and do much of whatever the Quran and sunna permit’s.

These people are those who will become successful on this dunia and in the hereafter.

NB; This soul has an angel who cast goodness into it, so that one will be aware of the excellence of the good it does.

The evils cannot even come close to this person.

NB. Those who fall under this state ere;

The prophets,

Some of the companions of the prophets,

E.g the prophet said to ummar; so ummar, don’t you know that when you are coming shatan run away?

Bukhari, book of manners.

And some pious people who leaves among us.

WHAT MAKES ONE COMMIT BADDEEDS AND SOLUTIONS

1.The hidden lies(ego) in the soul.

Sln; remind the soul its immortality and certainty of death.

Suratul yunus 56

( 56 )   He gives life and causes death, and to Him you will be returned.

If you are having it in your mind that you can’t dodge death and at every particular point in time you can die, then you will be able to control your soul.

2.The desire for worldly ornaments.

This happens when one want to pass through any means to achieve what his needs.

Sln;to know the world as a temporary abode and place of trial and text.

Suratul anbiya;35

35 )   Every soul will taste death. And We test you with evil and with good as trial; and to Us you will be returned.

So be aware that whatever good or suffering you are facing is a text on you.

3. Course by Iblis/shaytan

Makes bard things to look good, seduce and mislead people to do bard.

Sln; constant remembrance and seeking refuge in Allah and in putting once trust in him.

SURA FAATIH

( 6 )   Indeed, Satan is an enemy to you; so take him as an enemy. He only invite his party to be among the companions of the Blaze.

So consider shatan as an enemy and whatever you are doing, remember Allah.

Such that, when you are working, walking, on bed, etc and you are doing zikr…how can shatan come closer to you?

THE OUTCOME OF WHAT THE SOUL DOES.

1.WE WILL BE JUGDED ACCORDING TO OUR DEEDS.

SURATU FUSSILAT; 46

46 )   Whoever does righteousness - it is for his [own] soul; and whoever does evil [does so] against it. And your lord is not ever unjust to [His] servants.

THE SOUL THAT DISOBEY.

*SURATUL BAYYINA

( 6 )   Indeed, those who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists will be in the fire of Hell, abiding eternally therein. Those are the worst of creatures.

This means that the Christians, jews and pagans will be admitted in the hell fire

They will not be judged …..

A hadith in bukhari says that the prophet said that Allah will make them craw on their faces to jahannam…..

Another emphasized that they will also be tormented in the fire.

*suratul qaaria;1-11

( 1 )   The Striking Calamity -

( 2 )   What is the Striking Calamity?

( 3 )   And what can make you know what is the Striking Calamity?

( 4 )   It is the Day when people will be like moths, dispersed,

( 5 )   And the mountains will be like wool, fluffed up.

( 6 )   Then as for one whose scales are heavy [with good deeds],

( 7 )   He will be in a pleasant life.

( 8 )   But as for one whose scales are light,

( 9 )   His refuge will be an abyss.

( 10 )   And what can make you know what that is?

( 11 )   It is a Fire, intensely hot.

This tells us that as muslims,we qualify to be judged.

And the good people will be successful whiles the bard will inherit the fire.

THE SOUL THAT DOES GOOD.

THEY WILL BE SUCCESSFUL ON JUGDEMENT DAY

Tagaabon;16

( 16 )   So fear Allah as much as you are able and listen and obey and spend [in the way of Allah]; it is better for your selves. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful.

These are those who will be able to control their souls with their brain, heart, intestines and human body as a whole.

I end my presentation by diverting our attention to the last man who will enter aljannah. He will achieve the janna with the least in beauty but yet still when the door is open for him, he will stand at the door of his janna and admire the beauty for 1000 years.

May Allah help us to guide our soul to the best state. May Allah have mercy on us,

And may Allah bless our parents.

Wasalaamu alaikum warahmatullah wabarkaatu.
